Why Internet Connection Speed Test Inaccurate?

There are many websites that offer Internet connection speed test for users to detect if they are indeed getting what they are paying for. This is helpful since there are a lot of companies that provides connections that fall short of the expectations that these providers promised.

However, do not be too swayed with the result that these websites gives because some of them are in fact not accurate. Websites make use of ‘home grown’ applications and although there is nothing wrong with using such tool, many setbacks take place during the test that make the result inaccurate.

Three myths about DSL speed test:

  • Inappropriate file size estimation
As you download any file or perform some data transfer, there is the dialogue box that pops out which calculates the time that it would take to finish the file transfer. Some websites though will give you wrong information as to the timing calculation. They will often flash the information that a 500k file is equals to 500,000 bits.

  • The download starts at once
Again, the websites would make you believe that the downloading of a file would readily start as you click on the button. This is not true especially when the web server still reads and verifies the data to be transferred.

  • The use of JavaScript for the timing of events
JavaScript is basically utilized for the download applications. However, not all of the download attempts require this.

Therefore, to get a clear-cut information about your DSL broadband speed, it would be best to use various websites for testing and consistently run the test at different times of the day to ensure which is which tells you the truth.
